Hi, I’m Steve Gorlin. I am the founder and president of Gorlin Pools. My wife, Judy and I started our business in the basement of our home in 1999 and today we are 20 years old. Our goals were simple: to provide unmatched service and repair, Nordstrom quality customer service, and opportunities for employees to grow and succeed.
I first fell in love with water as a child in the 1950’s. Growing up, every year, my parents, Elsie & Phillip Gorlin, rented a room in a boarding house right behind the Lorraine Bradley Hotel on Brinley and Ocean Avenues in Bradley Beach. I was a fish. I was living in the ocean all day. It was the water me and my imagination.
From the time I can remember I was always selling things. I was selling magazines and greeting cards before I was 10. I delivered newspapers on my bike, ran errands for neighbors, shoveled snow and mowed lawns before I was 13.
Dad and I would buy transistor radio kits. We would build them, take them apart and rebuild them again. We would take appliances apart just to figure out how they worked.
In 1969, when my college roommate offered me a part-time summer job with his family’s swimming pool business in Newark, NJ, I jumped at the opportunity. I’d be around water while selling, servicing and repairing things. It was a perfect fit. Water – Selling – Repairing.
Life always has a funny way of interfering with plans, doesn’t it? Mine was no different. In 1971, I was in a near-fatal car accident. In 1972, I married Judy. Overnight I became the step-father of 3 children, five, four, and three years old. Today they are 52, 51, and 50 and Judy and I are married 47 years. I was truly blessed when Judy and the kids came into my life. We struggled during those early years. As a college student, I worked multiple jobs just to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads. We didn’t have much but we had each other, our love, and our dreams. I look back at those days fondly as formative years for building accountability, responsibility, trustworthiness, persistence, determination, grit, and loyalty. Plus, I fell in love with learning and I became a life-long student of personal growth, motivation, inspiration, mindset, physiology, teamwork, and leadership.
I learned a lot about how to run a business from my uncles. I always had a good sense that if I give my customers more than they expected and served my employees to help them to be more, do more and have more…I’d always get what I wanted. We help our clients get what they want and need with a win-win experience. Rather than focusing on short term profits, we instead focus on how we can maximize the service experience we provide to our family of long-time clients. Over 45 years of experience building trusted, long-lasting relationships with clients and vendors set us apart in any industry.
I’ve achieved a certain level of success in the national recreational water industry. I am one of just a handful of industry veterans who have earned and maintained these certifications: Certified Building Professional (CBP), Certified Service Professional (CSP), and Certified Pool Operator (CPO). And perhaps one of my biggest accomplishments was being elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals (APSP) in 2012-13. This is the largest and oldest pool association in the world, representing over 3000 member companies and hundreds of thousands of employees.
These past few years I’ve been working more “on the business” rather than “in the business.” The day to day field operations along with the office have been managed by our employees.
In 2004, Corey Smith began working here as a helper for $8.00 an hour. For the past two years, Corey is leading the way as our Operations and General Manager. One day soon, Corey will make Gorlin Pools his own and continue growing our tradition.

Steven Colon is our field supervisor in charge of the service and renovation crews. Under Steven’s direction our crews are encouraged to be sensitive to our client’s needs, respectful of our clients and their property, responsible to be on time and return all calls, and empathetic to our client’s challenges.
